I spent five days immersed in Brooklyn's vibrant energy, dedicating intentional time to writing my next bookâbook number six. Each morning, I woke up to a beautiful view and found myself reflecting on how nourished I felt. The decision to go away, to focus and think, provided everything I needed to reignite my creative spirit.
My mornings began with an early rise, a ritual that set the tone for my writing sessions. The stunning view outside my window, the glowing sun making its way up, and the quiet stillness of the day breaking created a perfect backdrop. I could hear myself think creatively for the first time in a long time. After my writing sessions, I explored and enjoyed the city with my friends, had beautiful conversations, and ate amazing food. This balance of disciplined work and playful exploration has breathed new life into my process. I struggled to get started at home, but being away, the simple act of getting up, dressed, and to work feels incredibly rewarding.
It's been almost two years since "How We Heal" was published and four years since the debut of "After the Rain." Reflecting on my twelve-year career as an author, I recognize that writing never gets easier, but the rewards are always worth it. The end result is another body of work that will help mold my legacy long after I leave this earth. Completing the first chapter and making significant progress on the second chapter affirm that I am on the right track and making good time.
A key factor in my renewed productivity is the support I receive from my husband and my close circle of friends. Encouraged by my husband, I have committed to taking a week'ish-long trip each month solely to write. This unwavering support allows me to embark on my writing space and retreat without hesitation. Having such a solid foundation is a gift, especially after the inevitable lulls I feel that follow publishing breaks. Now, I am back in the flow and feeling good about my progress.
Reflecting on my journey, I realize how crucial my "winning circle" of folks has been. Without them, I'm not sure where I would be. A significant lesson has emerged this yearâbeing intentional and mindful about the company I keep has been the right choice. The relationships that have fizzled out have made room for me to nurture the relationships with people who are aligned and in it for the long haul with me.
If there's any wisdom I've gleaned throughout my career, it is this: When it comes to your creativity, craft, and dreams, staying close to people who truly see and celebrate you is essential. Surround yourself with those who can genuinely hold your joy and good news. There is no room for naysayers. Your dreams are delicate and deserving of care. Stay away from those who do not believe in you or your greatness.
As I return to the groove of being home in Maryland, I carry these reflections with me. My time away has reaffirmed the importance of a supportive community and the necessity of creating space for creativity to flourish. With renewed vigor, I look forward to continuing this journey, one chapter at a time.

What better inspiration for a book on relationships than the motivation youâre getting from the strength of your relationships! I cannot wait to read it. Greetings from NY â¤ï¸
